Chapter Twelve

The dress, the shoes, the makeup, the hair… I did a slow spin in front of the mirror, getting as much of a full-length look as I could. I’d never expected to see myself in anything like this. With my movements limited, someone else had picked out my dress, probably Fury, although none of them took official credit. But it was a gown to put Cinderella’s to shame—if Cinderella liked gowns not only gorgeous but classy.

My silver tissue skirt fell gracefully to the floor and swirled out when I turned, rippling and beautiful. The top was a sleeveless fitted silver lace with openwork to reveal cleavage as well as my sides and part of my back. And my suspicions were proven correct, any bra configuration would’ve shown through, so I’d gone without.

“Are you sure I look okay? Maybe I should wear a bra and put a jacket over it or something?”

AJ rolled her eyes. “Even if I was willing to let you put something over that beautiful creation the guys commissioned from the village seamstress for you, do you think your school blazer or winter coat would look nice with it?”

“No?”

“Darn right, no. And you’d hurt their feelings, make them think you don’t like it. Turn around again.”

I made a slow pivot while she watched carefully. “Are you sure it’s okay?”

AJ let out a sigh all the way from her toes. “It’s not only okay, it fits like it was made for you, probably because it was. I’m amazed she was able to do such a great job if you never had a fitting in person.”

“I never did,” I marveled, lost in the mirror again. “I didn’t even know the dress was being made. It is pretty, isn’t it?”

“Gorgeous.” She piled the last of her things on the bed. “I hope you don’t mind if I leave the bags here until tomorrow? We’re fashionably late, already.”

“Not at all.” The deep voice came from the doorway. I pivoted to see Danger leaning on the doorjamb. When had the door opened? It had been closed while I dressed, hadn’t it? “We’ll bring everything up to you then, AJ. Right now we need to get going. We’ll fill you in on the plan on the way up. At least some of it.” He disappeared.

AJ and I looked at each other then the doorway.

“Some of it?” she asked. “Don’t they trust us?”

“I think they do. We’ll find out why.” I shook my head slowly. “He didn’t even say anything about how I looked. Or you. We just spent hours getting pretty and it’s not noticeable?”

“Well, I understand him not commenting or even seeing me. They only have eyes for you, you know. You’ll wear out your pretty shoes dancing.” Her wistful tones drew my attention to her. “I hope I am one-fourth as lucky one day.”

“AJ. I’m sure the Volkovs will dance with you tonight. Otherwise, they’ll just be standing around.” Because no way was I doing to stand by while the remaining Hellcats danced with them.
